Getting started
What is 5to9?
5to9 is a habit and energy tracker for the hours outside work: your Morning 5–9, your Evening 5–9, or any four hours you choose. You tick off small habits, log how you feel, and over time see what gives you energy.
Is it free?
Yes. 5to9 is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up. You only sign in with Google if you choose to turn on Google Drive backup.
Which phones does it work on?
Android phones running Android 8.0 or newer. There is no iPhone version at the moment.
What is a "5–9 window"?
A four-hour block of time that belongs to you. Pick Morning (5–9 am), Evening (5–9 pm) or My 5–9 (any four hours). You can have up to two at once. If you turn a window off, its habits are paused, not deleted.
Habits and energy
What is a minimum version?
A smaller version of a habit for low-energy days, like "Read 1 page" instead of "Read 20 pages". Doing the minimum still counts as done.
What is a recovery day?
A day off on purpose. Mark today as a recovery day and it won't count against your consistency. Rest is part of the routine.
I forgot to tick a habit yesterday. Can I fix it?
Yes. On the Habits screen, tap the back arrow next to "Today" to go back up to six days and tick what you did.
Can a habit be "3 times a week" instead of daily?
Yes. When you add or edit a habit, choose a weekly target instead of set days.
How do energy check-ins work?
Tap a number from 1 to 10 for how you feel right now. You can add tags (like "Poor sleep") and a short note if you want. You can check in from the Home screen, from a reminder, or from the home-screen widget. If you tap the wrong number, just tap the right one straight away and it will be corrected.
Why don't I see any insights yet?
5to9 waits until there's enough data to be honest. Energy insights appear after you log energy on 3 different days. Habit patterns need at least 5 days with the habit done and 5 without, with energy logged in that window. Tag patterns need a tag used on at least 5 check-ins.
Are insights medical advice?
No. They are patterns in your own logs, not proof that one thing causes another, and not medical advice. 5to9 is a personal wellbeing tool, not a medical device.
Does 5to9 have streaks?
No streak counters and no resets. Instead you see consistency, like "Completed on 18 of the last 21 days", so one missed day never wipes out your progress.
Privacy and backup
Where is my data stored?
On your phone. There is no 5to9 server, and we never receive your habits, energy check-ins or notes. Your data only leaves your phone if you export a file or turn on Google Drive backup.
How does Google Drive backup work?
Go to You → Google Drive backup → Connect. 5to9 saves a backup to a hidden app folder in your own Google Drive about once a day (when you're online and your battery isn't low), and whenever you tap "Back up now". 5to9 can only see its own hidden folder, not your other Drive files.
How do I move to a new phone?
- Install 5to9 on the new phone.
- Go to You → Google Drive backup, connect the same Google account, and tap Restore.
No Drive? Use You → Export backup on the old phone, move the file across, then You → Restore from backup on the new one.
What does app lock do?
It asks for your fingerprint, face or screen lock when you open 5to9, and hides the app's content in the recent-apps view. You choose when it locks again: as soon as you leave the app, or after 1, 5 or 15 minutes. Your fingerprint and face data are handled by Android; 5to9 never sees them.
Does the widget show my habits when app lock is on?
Yes. The widget shows today's habits and your latest energy even when app lock is on, so you can tick things off quickly. If you'd rather keep that private, remove the widget from your home screen.
How do I delete my data?
In the app: You → Delete all my data. Uninstalling also removes everything on the phone. To delete Drive backups, see Delete your data.
Troubleshooting
My reminders arrive late or not at all.
To save battery, reminders can arrive a few minutes late. If they don't arrive at all:
- Check that notifications are allowed for 5to9 in your phone's Settings.
- Check that the reminder is turned on in You → Reminders (or on the habit itself).
- On Samsung phones, go to Settings → Apps → 5to9 → Battery and choose Unrestricted.
Google Drive won't connect.
Make sure you're online and signed in to a Google account on the phone, then try again. If it still fails, email us with the error message shown in the app.
How do I contact you?
